Clarify Content
If we create an experiential book app, do we have to use book content from one of the authorized authors or can we use any book, since the app will not be published and only used for this challenge?

Hi Melody,
Thanks for writing. Entrants must not include copyrighted or trademarked material in their submissions unless they have written permission to use such material.
We do hope you'll enter the challenge. Thank you.

Hi Marny,
Thank you for your reply. We are looking to use the text from a book that is in the public domain.
I notice that all of the books that have been authorized and are accessible through the API are rather adult oriented, nothing for children. Not exactly the preferred genre at our studio, so is it acceptable to utilize the API only to show that we are able to pull in the data and include those features but not have it necessarily match with the interactivity that we build since there are no books that would match our style?

Hi Melody,
As long as you have the rights to use the content, you may do so.
Feel free to use the text description area to provide more insight into how the API would be used with different content.
Just a reminder that in order to be eligible for the competition submissions must meet the basic criteria below:
"(i) Contestants must create a working software application that utilizes the HarperCollins OpenBook API available at http://developer.harpercollins.com/ (an “Application”). The Application should enhance and go beyond the traditional ways individuals read and discover books."
Additionally, I encourage you to visit the Official Rules for a quick run-down of the requirements: http://booksmash.challengepost.com/rules
Thank you.
Best,
Marny
